Dr.Carlos
Margarit is Professor of Surgery and Chief of HPB (Hepatic, Pancreatic
and Biliary) Surgery and Liver Transplantation in the Department
of Surgery at the Hospital Vall Hebrón , Universidad Autónoma
of Barcelona, Spain. In 1973, Dr. Margarit earned his Medical
Degree at Universidad de Barcelona School of Medicine. He served
his surgical residency at Hospital Vall Hebrón, Barcelona
between 1974 -78. Dr.Margarit was a member of the Department of
Surgery at Hospital de Bellvitge since 1978. In 1982, he was trained
in HPB surgery with Dr.J.Fortner at MSKCC of New York and in Transplantation
with Dr.Thomas Starzl at the University of Pittsburgh, where he
was fellow in transplantation in 1983. After returning to Barcelona
, Dr.Margarit organised the first Liver Transplant Program in Spain
at H. de Bellvitge and on february 23 1984 , he performed the first
liver transplant in Spain. He pioneered also the first Pediatric
Liver Transplant program at H.Infantil Vall Hebrón that started
in june 1985. Since 1988, Dr.Margarit has been the Director of the
HPB Surgery and Liver Transplantation Unit in the Department of
Surgery at Hospital Vall Hebrón in Barcelona. Dr.Margarit has performed over 700 liver transplants in adults and children . He introduced also the techniques of graft reduction, split liver and live donation for children. The Liver Transplant program at H.Vall Hebrón is characterised by accepting candidates that are not accepted in other programs as patients older than 65 years or patients with portal and mesenteric vein thrombosis . The Pediatric liver transplant program is a reference for patients from all over Spain and from Hispanoamerican countries. Dr.Margarit is a well-known expert in HPB Surgery, he has performed over 500 liver resections for primary and metastasic cancer. During the last decade, very promising results are obtained with the combination of a very agressive surgery, new chemotherapy and other methods as radiofrequency ablation in the treatment of metastasic liver cancer. The HPB Unit is a reference Unit for patients from all over Spain and other countries and also for surgeons for training in HBP surgery and liver transplantation. Dr.Margarit is Professor of Surgery at Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona. He organises every year the Course on HBP Surgery and Liver Transplantation at H.Vall Hebrón that this year 2004 will celebrate the XIV edition. He participates actively in all kinds of transplantation meeting. Presently he is the President of the Catalan Transplantation Society. Research interest in immunosuppression, tolerance, transplantation immunology, organ preservation, auxiliary liver transplantation, hepatic tumors and treatment of liver metastases.He has written over 20 book chapters, 160 scientific publications and 700 oral and poster presentations in national and international Meetings. Dr.Margarit 's private offices are in Clínica Quirón and Clínica Corachán in Barcelona where he performes all kind of HBP Surgery and General Surgery procedures. Finally, Dr.Carlos Margarit is a sports aficionado particularly marathon runner, alpinism and sky and truly devoted to his five children; Pau, Laura, Anna, Eva, and Carol and to his wife Lluisa.
